Heating and Cooling | Energy Saving Tips | By Bryan Low | Long and Foster Real Estate, Inc.

Heating and Cooling systems in your home use more energy and drain more dollars than any other system in your home.  No matter what type of heating or cooling system you have, you can save money and increase your comfort by maintaining and upgrading your equipment.  Here are a few basic heating and cooling tips that will help you maintain and save money on your energy bills.

1. Make sure your thermostat is set to a comfortable level in the winter and as in the summer.

2.  Clean and replace filters on furnices about once a month or as needed.

3. Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed; make sure they’re not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or drapes.

4. Bleed trapped air from hot-water radiators once or twice a season; if in doubt about how to perform this task, call a licensed professional.

5. Place heat-resistant radiator reflectors between exterior walls and the radiators.

6. Turn off kitchen, bath, and other exhaust fans within 20 minutes after you are done cooking or bathing; when replacing exhaust fans, consider installing high-efficiency, low-noise models.

7. During the heating season, keep the draperies and shades on your south-facing windows open during the day to allow the sunlight to enter your home and closed at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.

8. During the cooling season, keep the window coverings closed during the day to prevent solar gain.

Follow these tips and you will be saving energy and money in your home.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
